Club History

The club was founded in 1993. Originally there was a single monthly meeting (in Sutton-in-Ashfield) but this was soon increased at the request of the members to two meetings a month.

Many more formal clubs depend on demonstrations, talks and slideshows with just an occasional workshop. At Ashfield the emphasis is very much towards the informal and "hands on". Members regularly bring their own own material to meetings. The club caters for a wide range of experience in bonsai and welcomes new members. Advice is available from the more seasoned and creative members and we try to foster a relaxed, "family feel" with everyone having a say in the clubs affairs. Each year, however, we do invite one or two speakers of international fame to supplement our workshops and we occasionally organise weekend workshops with well known bonsai personalties. Presently our meetings are held in the comfortable and spacious church hall at South Normanton and new members are always welcome.

In 2014 the club members will continue to exhibit at major exhibitions, both at home and abroad. In particular, several trees owned by Ashfield members, have been accepted for display at the esteemed Noelanders Trophy Exhibition in Belgium. Also in the following month of February, the club has been invited to present a display stand at the Swindon Winter Image Show.

Club night Thursday 6th March

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Tomlinson recently.
Many of Ashfield Bonsai Club learned much from Harry as members of the East Midlands Bonsai Society, I fondly remember visiting their annual exhibitions and regular visits to Greenwood Nursery for trees and all bonsai related paraphernalia.
We send our sincere condolences to Petra, Corin and Paul at this very sad time.

We hastily arranged for members to bring along their favourite Greenwood bought bonsai for this evenings table show.
Shown below are the trees that members bought along.

John's Plum

Paul's cut leaf Beech
Paul's Korean Hornbeam
Chris's Maple started from seed approximately 20 years ago, an earlier photograph shows the tree on rock
Paul's Myrobulan Plum started from one of Greenwoods cuttings
Tony's Larch
Mark's Podocarpus
